Two new appointments, as non-executive directors to the board of McCarthy Limited, have been announced by the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Brand Pretorius.
The new directors are Bongi Thwala, the Commercial Director for Bid Industrial and Commercial Products, and Gillian McMahon, the Group Transformation Executive at the Bidvest corporate office.

The Computer Centre Project continues

One of McCarthy’s main corporate social investment programmes, the Computer Centre project, has been running since 2001 and has facilitated the establishment of fully-fledged computer centres in 27 schools in KwaZulu-Natal.
The project is unique as it is a partnership between six sponsors – Afridek, Bytes Technology, BCX, Unilever, Daily News and McCarthy – and the Department of Education’s IT division.
Schools apply for sponsorship and are evaluated by the sponsors before a short list is made.

The Rally to Read was launched in 1998 when the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), approached McCarthy to lend them a 4×4 vehicle.
Such a vehicle was required by the HSRC to reach some of the most remote rural schools in KwaZulu-Natal as part of a study of school resources.
Upon their return the researchers shared with McCarthy the schools’ desperate lack of educational resource and one of the most successful rural educational initiatives in the country was born.
