With the excitement of the World Cup growing, the children are also looking forward to a long school holiday and will need something to keep them busy.

Kitten KOFU… Rescued and Rehomed

The Tshwane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) rescued an abandoned five-week-old kitten from a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in East Lynn about a month ago.
A member of the public alerted the Tshwane SPCA, who then immediately attended to the complaint and rescued the kitten.
Kofu has in the meantime recovered at the Tshwane SPCA at the Waltloo premises where he was under 24-hour supervision and surrounded with love and care.
Kofu has now been adopted by a journalist at The Rekord newspaper, Bonny Tubbs.

Survivor Celebrity Supports SA Guide Dog Association

The South African Guide Dog Association for the Blind hosted an awareness day at the Irene Mall on Saturday, April 17.
Noel Midlane, communications officer for the Corporate Fund Development, said that they are very lucky to be chosen by Celebrity Survivor, Garth Collins for supporting them in the fund raise for the association.

Wag-a-Walk for more than just a dog

On Saturday 17 April 2010 the Tshwane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) hosted a 1,4km and 2,4km ‘Wag-a-Walk’ event at Smuts House, Irene to create awareness and raise much needed funds for animals in their care.
Various celebrities acted as adjudicators for the pet competitions after the walk.
Prizes were awarded for the friendliest dog, pet-and-owner look-a-like, ex-adopted SPCA dog and well-groomed dog.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal inaugurated

The new vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Pretoria, Prof Cheryl de la Rey, was recently inaugurated at a function attended by more than a thousand dignitaries, business leaders and academics.
The Director General of Higher Education and Training, Prof Mary Metcalfe, delivered a congratulatory speech on behalf of the Ministry.
Prof de la Rey was appointed UP’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal on 27 July 2009 and assumed her duties at the University of Pretoria on 9 November 2009.

The @Health Diabetic Centre, Centurion held their annual Diabetic open day on Saturday, April 17 at their premises in Lyttelton.
According to Doctor Dan Jackson of @Health, the purpose of the day was to create awareness among the public regarding the dangers and threats of the epidemic of diabetes.
Free diabetic tests, including blood sugar and blood pressure tests were available through out the day.
“This was the fourth year that @Health holds an open event like this and already the numbers in people interested are escalating,” Dr. Jackson said. …

PHOTO & WINE FEST

Irene Village Mall will host a Photo & Wine Fest on 14 and 15 May 2010.
This event is a culmination of their web-driven photo competition “Through the Udder Side of the Lens”, which has been running since August 2009.
The photographs, which made the final cut will be blown up and exhibited throughout the mall from Monday 10 May.

Peerless Primulas

For those with lightly shaded gardens, primulas are a must.
There are a number of cultivars available to the gardener, the three most notable being the “Fairy primula” (P. malacoides), the “English Primrose” (P. aculusis) and the German Primrose (P. obconica).
The Fairy primula flowers profusely throughout winter and spring and are ideal for inter planting with spring flowering bulbs and Iceland poppies.
