Voortrekker Monument turning blue

November is World Diabetics month and in support the Voortrekker Monument will be bathed in blue from 14 November 2011.
The World Diabetics campaign is aimed at educating all levels of society about diabetics.
The IDF (International Diabetics Federation) has called on all countries to promote World Diabetics Day by colouring well-known monuments throughout the world blue.
Blue is the colour of the circle which is the worldwide symbol of diabetics.   
More than 400 monuments and iconic buildings throughout the world will be taking part in the campaign during November.

“Dit is die maand Oktober, die mooiste, mooiste maand..”  het Louis Leipoldt gedig. Dit is waar. Die Jakarandabome is in blom, tuine is oortrek met blomme in die kleure van die reënboog en dit teen die agtergrond van die groen bome en grasperke. Ons is dankbaar dat ons die natuur se wonderwerk kan beleef.

Kiepersol Dienssentrum Eer die Bejaardes

Die Kiepersol Dienssentrum was weereens gasheer vir die jaarlikse viering van die Dag van die Bejaardes “Eer die Bejaardes” konsert deur Sonja Smith Begrafnisdienste gereël.
Trevor Nasser was die gaskunstenaar wat by die geleentheid voor ‘n stampvol saal bejaardes en gaste opgetree het.

Diabetes South Africa opens office in Centurion

The Pretoria Branch of Diabetes South Africa (DSA) recently opened its new office at the @ Health Medical Centre, in Jean Avenue, Centurion.
This office space is kindly sponsored by Drs Dan Jackson and Christel Olivier of Diabetes Care Centurion who operate their practice in this centre.
At present the office is manned by a volunteer and branch administrator, Sunette Schult, and will be open on Mondays and Fridays from 09.00 to 13.00. Any member of the public is welcome to visit the office to obtain information on Diabetes and DSA.

Bringing the beauty out of girls for a good cause

The Primary School Westerlig in Danville, Pretoria receives a small subsidy from the government and runs at a huge loss every month.
The income from school fees is insufficient and the expenses have to cater for social services as well.
Often the children go hungry and have no sport outfits to represent their school at inter school activities, these clothes are often borrowed from the school.
Despite this, there are children who perform excellent and have received bursaries to other schools.
Teachers, books and counsellors also have to be paid from the very limited …

The Job Club Dream Out Loud Business competition winners announced

The Job Club, an NGO involved in enterprise development and upliftment programmes in disadvantaged communities and on student campuses, held a successful business plan competition for young people under the age of 35.
The Job Club have a team of people who are passionate about helping young entrepreneurs to find their feet and hosted a first youth business plan competition in September 2011. The aim was to look for business plans that were either viable or had the potential to be viable.

PINK DRIVE High Coffees  breast cancer awareness project

The PinkDrive team travelled during the month of October 2011 taking their High Coffees breast cancer awareness project to all women in Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Sandton and ended the tour at the Waterfront Protea Hotel in Centurion.
The aim of the tour was to raise funds to keep the PinkDrive mobile breast check units operational. The trucks travel to outlying areas bringing modern technology women to undergo mammography tests. If breast cancer is detected early it could, in most cases, be treated successfully.

VF Plus-jeug ondersteun Borskankermaand

It came to The Centurion’s attention that an email is doing the rounds stating that the SPCA is closing down due to the lack of funds and that all must add their name to the email to save the animals which will be left destitute.
On The Centurion’s enquiry, the TSHWANE SPCA answered as follow:
“We have received a copy of this email doing the rounds and the address of the person who set it up is non-existent!
