The Miss Deaf South Africa Pageant (MDSA) is a non-profitable organization founded in 1997 by Gert and Narda Els, a couple who from personal experience understands the difficulties of the life of those with hearing impairment.
Chris and Leviena Smit joined the Miss Deaf South Africa Pageant in November 2014 and became Directors of MDSA in May 2015.
The Pageant’s vision is to see the whole Deaf society in South Africa develop through the medium of the beauty and entertainment industry by enhancing self-discipline, confidence and freedom of culture and by presenting opportunities to empower people through competition.
Miss Deaf South Africa must be someone who can educate the hearing about the Deaf community and share with them the views of the Deaf community regarding so-called ‘disability’.
The Miss Deaf South Africa 2015 will not only be an ambassador but will also represent South Africa at the Miss Deaf World Pageant.
One of the top five finalists is Janie Erasmus from Centurion who matriculated from Eldoraigne High School who entered the competition twice before and was crowned first princess on both occasions.
Janie would like to educate the hearing community in order to have a better understanding of people with hearing disabilities and to educate companies in terms of their service delivery to the large deaf community of our country and to create an equal society.
A qualified somatologist, Janie has trained deaf girls and helped them obtain a certificate in beauty that gave them the ability to obtain stable jobs in the beauty industry.
The crowning of the Miss Deaf South Africa 2015 winner will take place on 2 October 2015 at a glittering gala dinner.
By supporting Janie, the community of Centurion could vote for her by sending an sms MDS 07 to 47439 before the closing date of 25 September 2015.
