Back to Back victories

Two weeks after finishing 15th in the London Marathon, Irvette van Zyl notched up her second consecutive SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge victory when she braved wet and windy conditions to win the Port Elizabeth leg at Pollok Beach in 33.28 minutes.
The Phalula twins, Lebogang and Diana-Lebo, were second and third, in 34.09 and 34.10 minutes respectively.
“I was so happy to win in Port Elizabeth. I’ve always hated the PE race because I’ve never been able to win here before. I almost felt like crying when I crossed the finish line, because it was like a dream come true,” Irvette said.
Being a mother of eight months old Louis, she said that she and her husband LJ (a 400m hurdler) are relaxed and in a better routine because of the baby.
The first three juniors home, Simonay Weitsz, Nicole van der Merwe and Ashleigh Simonis are all part of the SPAR Grand Prix mentorship programme.
The queen of road running in South Africa, Sonja Laxton, made history when she ran her 90th Challenge race and finished in 49.43 running in the 60-69 year category.
Ronelle Steyn finished 1.05.29 in the 70+ year category.
