Grade 10 and 11 students recently attended a five week youth development programme in the township of Olievenhoutbosch near Centurion.
The programme focuses on the development of public speaking, presentation and leadership skills in order to prepare the students to succeed in the workplace.
According to Kefilwe Morobane, managing director of Giving Wings that hosted the event in partnership with the Olieven Development Association said that the ability to communicate effectively is a critical skill.
On Saturday, 11 June 2016, the programme concluded with the students participating in a speech contest on the topic of what freedom means to them.
The keynote speaker at the event was Frank Magwegwe who shared his inspirational story about how he went from being a homeless street vendor to earning a top position in corporate South Africa.
The winner of the 2016 Giving Wings Speech Contest was Nkosinathi Ndala, a grade 11 student from Steve Tshwete Secondary School.
Usisipho Goso, grade 11 student from Steve Tshwete Secondary School ended in the second position and in third place was Abigail Mohowa, grade 11 student from Olievenhoutbosch Secondary School.
