Councillor says no to gala dinner

21 June 2009 No Comment

Councillor Clive Napier recognizes that many Tshwane residents go hungry, do not have work, nor access to basic services such as housing, water, electricity and sewage - and other residents whose existing services are under-resourced, and often erratic and inefficient.

Councillor Napier also takes serious note of the chaotic state of the municipality’s finances including a debt in the order of R3 billion, cash flow problems and the many rate payers who experience severe difficulties in making ends meet and paying the normal rates and service charges due to the municipality. Mindful of the many ratepayers, particularly those of ward 57 that experience serious hardships, Councilor Napier shall not attend lavish functions such as Gala Dinners and in particular the Gala Dinner following the ‘State of the City Address 2009.

He notes that a similar function in 2008 cost Tshwane rate payers R143 600,00 (Council answer to question 31 July 2008) for catering alone – excluding other costs involved. In solidarity with the ratepayers of Tshwane who suffer severe financial and material hardships, Councillor Napier will in future only attend functions which are likely to contribute to his work as a councilor and are genuinely in the interests of ratepayers.
