Eye-care awareness month started on 24 September 2012 and will continue until 20 October 2012, emphasizing the importance of regular eye tests.

Most of the public do not know that 75% of blindness can be prevented by testing your eyes every year.

Symptoms of eye conditions can include vision loss, altered eye movements, eye pain, visual field loss and bulging eyes.

Any changes in one’s vision could potentially cause severe damage and the help of a medical professional should be sought immediately.

The most common eye problems are Glaucoma and Cataracts.

Glaucoma is an eye condition arising from pressure in the eye that can damage the optic nerve.

The condition can cause vision loss and eventually blindness, but it can be treated with the use of eye drops and in certain cases with laser and surgical procedures.

Cataracts are the single most important cause of blindness worldwide and it is responsible for 50% of blindness in South Africa.

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the eye, which results in blurred or dull vision and is caused by a number of factors including aging, trauma to the eye and diabetes.

Exposure to the UV rays of the sun can also contribute to cataract development.

The condition tends to cause a slow deterioration in sight and individuals with cataracts may improve their vision with the assistance of specially prescribed glasses.

Surgery may eventually become necessary but not everyone affected by cataracts have the means to afford this operation.

This year the Pretoria Eye Institute will again celebrate World Sight Day on 11 October 2012 by performing more than 400 free cataract operations.
