Social Butterfly for World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

16 October 2014 No Comment

The annual World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD) will be held on Saturday 11 October 2014 to celebrate and support Hospice and Palliative Care worldwide.
The theme this year will be “Achieving universal coverage of palliative care: Who cares? We do!”
The aim of WHPCD is to share their vision of increasing the availability of Hospice and to raise awareness and understanding of the needs of people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families, be it medical, social practical or spiritual needs.
Each year, more than 60 countries take part in the festivities of WHPCD with activities such as fundraising events, public awareness campaign and advocacy meetings.
The WHPCD celebrations will centre upon the Social Butterfly campaign, which was launched in August and the butterfly tattoo was designed by HPCA.
Former South African national football and Leeds captain, Lucas Radebe and South African Paralympic medallist and butterfly champ, Achmat Hassiem, palliative care ambassadors for HPCA, are joined by various other celebrities sporting the tattoos.
All South Africans are encouraged to visit their nearest hospice to purchase their temporary butterfly tattoo at a price of R20 and to and post a photograph of themselves wearing the tattoo to any of HPCA social media sites.
The funds, and awareness generated from this process will go a long way into ensuring that knowledge of palliative care is spread nation-wide.
